Sackets Harbor, NY
Designated a New York State Heritage Area and rich in history and character, this charming village on the shore of Black River Bay, Lake Ontario, offers visitors unique specialty shops, restaurants, and recreational activities year-round.
As the site of one of the most crucial battles of the War of 1812 and the location of the largest U.S. naval station on the Great Lakes during that period, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site features living history exhibits, historic home tours and a history trail. In addition, the site hosts the Annual War of 1812 Weekend commemorating the famous battle with participating reenactors from throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Military Cemetery, Madison Barracks and Pickering-Beach Museum are also open to history-minded visitors.
The cultural scene features The Arts Association of Northern New York, whose gallery showcases local artists as well as The Lake Ontario Playhouse, which hosts theatrical productions and top comic entertainment. The Seaway Trail Discovery Center, which highlights a 518-mile National Scenic By-way is headquartered here in the former Union Hotel built in 1817. Rich architectural heritage is evident as you walk through the village and view many homes and buildings constructed as early as 1803.
