A LITTLE CHANGE OF DIRECTION... For more than 30 years, the American Fastener Journal has typically featured a fastener supplier in the cover story. We are going to change our traditional cover story a little bit and feature more stories about the “business philosophy” of successful fastener distributors and/or fastener manufacturers (suppliers). We started with Dr. Lou Raymond in the March/April issue, and with this issue, we feature Kimball Midwest, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. I have known of Kimball Midwest since the early 1950s, when I started working in our family fastener distributorship, Capital Sales. At that time, Kimball was known as Midwest Motor Supply. I have seen the success Kimball Midwest has had throughout the last several decades, and I greatly respect the drive and direction led by the McCurdy family. Kimball Midwest is now one of the leading automotive aftermarket and fleet fastener distributors in America. A large portion of their success comes from distributing quality fastener product lines, among thousands of other MRO items, with an extremely high level of service. To accompany the featured cover story article, we contacted one of Kimball’s long-time major customers, Manatts, headquartered in Newton, Iowa. Manatts is a major roadbuilding contractor with 2,000 employees and plants and quarries located throughout Iowa and some of the neighboring states. Kimball Midwest services all Manatts’ locations with fasteners and with numerous maintenance items for their fleet of trucks and construction vehicles. Manatts’ satisfaction and high regard for Kimball Midwest is a great indicator that Kimball’s fastener distributorship will continue in a successful direction. Future cover stories will feature Martin Calfee of Copper State Bolt and Nut, Tim O’Keefe of G. L. Huyett, and Doug Adams of EFC International. I hope you enjoy all their stories and can learn a little to make your company more profitable and successful in the coming years. In other news, I’d like to take this opportunity to address computer viruses. Just after I finished writing the previous three paragraphs, a computer virus I’d never heard of hit my system like a ton of bricks. I thought I had lost everything, including many databases that contained material from 20 years ago. I was going nuts! I was in the middle of this May/June AFJ issue and finishing up the next Aerospace Fasteners eZine. I have several software programs to protect my computer, so I was really shocked to watch my computer screen disappear right in front of my eyes. I share this as a WARNING. Double check and triple check your security and antivirus software! I was lucky, and after two days, I was able to recover all my information and once again move forward. It was not a fun weekend! Onward and upward! There will be a lot of activity during the summer months, and we will report the news in the FASTENER NEWS NOW tab on www.fastenerjournal.com and in the June U.S. Fastener Report. Also, by this time, everyone in the AFJ circulation should have received the American Fastener Source Guide 2012. I wish you good luck and continued success with your fastener business. I look forward to hearing your ideas, comments and concerns.
