View from Founders When it comes to campus housing, your sons and daughters are benefit-ing from a “domino effect” that’s being made possible by our new student residences, Tritton Hall and Kim Hall. Their impact is virtually campus-wide, immediate, long-lasting—and singularly Haverfordian. I n large part, this transformation is made possible by the generosity of two alumni and their families. But it also shows how every contribution to the College’s Parents’ Fund (which is part of the Annual Fund) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for the entire community. It all started when the families of Steven Jaharis ’82 and Michael B. Kim ’85 provided funds necessary for the construc-tion of Haverford’s first new dormitories since 1968. Located on what had been a parking lot opposite the Whitehead Campus Center, the Jaharis family named Tritton Hall in honor of Tom Tritton, Haverford’s 12th president; Michael Kim named Kim Hall in honor of his father, Ki Yong Kim. These just-completed resi-dences house 160 students and represent state-of-the-art design with respect to life within the walls, while respecting sustain-ability throughout as evidenced by features such as green roofs, LEED certification, geothermal HVAC in common spaces and absence of energy-wasting internal stair-wells. They are marvelous buildings, and I encourage you to learn more at the project website . So how do these additions to campus initiate a domino effect? The answer lies in the College’s commitment to preserving the size of the student body. By creating new living space without adding more students, we’re able to make several sub-stantial changes that impact quality of life on campus at its most fundamental level: floor plans and facilities. Interim President Joanne V. Creighton The strategic move of 160 students creates opportunities that benefit every-one. The most dramatic changes are in Barclay Hall and the three North Dorms. The College is slightly larger than it was when Steve Jaharis and Michael Kim attended Haverford, and these four dorms absorbed much of the increase when living rooms were converted to bedrooms. With so many decamping for Tritton and Kim Halls, those living rooms are being returned to service, and a large common lounge/study has been created on the first continued on page 8
