Regretfully, according to the Iowa Department of Human Services, in 2007 a total of 22,991 cases of child abuse and neglect were confirmed or founded. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services reported that in 2007 there were 111,742 reports of child abuse and neglect. Children who experience abuse or neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime. One-third of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize their own children. The Child Abuse Council’s mission is to lead community efforts to eliminate child abuse and neglect by strengthening children and families through treatment, education and prevention. FREE
