70 HALL OF FAME 2015 Midwest Real Estate News | December 2015/January 2016 MICHAEL THORSLAND The bio: Michael “Mick” Thorsland is a well-respected veteran of the commercial real estate financing sector in the Upper Midwest and beyond. After earning degrees in mathematics and economics from the University of Minnesota, Thorsland worked in management train-ing and as a mortgage analyst with IDS, and went on to become assistant vice president and a top production officer at First Bank System. Thorsland’s desire to form lasting relationships with clients combined with his innate entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Venture Mort-gage Corporation, a boutique commercial mortgage banking firm, in January of 1990. Since then, under Thorsland’s leadership, Venture Mortgage has originated billions of dollars in commercial real estate financing, built a servicing portfolio of more than $500 million and cemented its reputation as an innovative, flexible, independent mortgage banking firm. In his 42 years in the commercial real estate industry, Thorsland has served as president of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Min-nesota and is a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, the Minnesota Shopping Center Association and Strategic Alliance Mortgage. Members of the Venture Mortgage team describe Thorsland as an inspirational leader with integrity who takes care to share his knowledge at every opportunity, while those who have worked with him on deals speak to his unwavering focus and ability to create solutions for all involved. Thorsland cares deeply about the well-being of others, and proudly supports VEAP food shelf and Children’s Hospital of Minnesota. Founder Venture Mortgage Edina, MN RICK TOLLAKSON The bio: Under Rick Tollakson’s leadership, Hubbell Realty Company attained celebrity status in 2006. That’s when Tollakson led his Hub-bell team and more than 200 trade partners in building a new home for an Iowa family on ABC’s nationally televised “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” But that isn’t the only noteworthy real estate project that Tollakson, who boasts more than 31 years in the real estate industry, has led. In 2009, the Hubbell team, again with its trade partners, built “9 Homes in 9 Days” for Anawim Housing, a project that helped transform the Forest Avenue neighborhood in Des Moines. Then in 2013, Hubbell Realty Company completed what Tollakson considers its most challenging “extreme build” to date: Cabin for Campers 24/7 for Easter Seals Iowa’s Camp Sunnyside. This week-long project replaced the 1960s vintage cabins at the camp with a pair of 7,500-square-foot dormitory-style cabins that are handicap-accessible, energy efficient and include interior storm shelters. The two cabins serve more than 2,400 Easter Seals campers each year. Making it happen: What do I enjoy most about commercial real estate? I enjoy making things happen, making our community better and making a difference. You can do all of this in commercial real estate. President and chief executive officer The challenges: Commercial real estate continues to be more complicated, and with that more challenging. Government regulations and requirements along with increased lender and investor scrutiny of deals are the areas that add the most to this complexity. Success steps: I believe success in this business, as with most, begins with hard work. You need to educate yourself in the industry, get involved in the community, network with the right people and provide your clients with an excellent customer experience. During my time at Hubbell Realty Company, we have worked very hard to make sure we watch the trends and understand the market. We continually look for ways to train our associates to better serve the customer and to provide quality in everything we do. Out-of-office hours: I compete in triathlons and duathlons, the most recent being the World Duathlon Championships. This is a way for me to use my competitive nature to also stay fit. I have a long love for Iowa State football and basketball and try to make it to many of the games. One of my favorite things to do to support the art community is to attend productions held at the Des Moines Civic Center. I have three grown children and 5 grandchildren that fill the remainder of my free time. Hubbell Realty Company Des Moines, IA
