Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, chair of ACC.16, highlighted the many new features of the meeting during the Opening Showcase Session, which welcomed more than 13,000 cardiovascular professionals to Chicago. The Lounge & Learn Pavilion was the center of activity and was home to the Fellows in Training, Early Career, Women in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Team and International Lounges. The inaugural FIT Jeopardy: Battle of the States Competition was a huge success with 28 state chapters competing head-to-head in the new ENGAGE@ACC.16 Studio. Congratulations to the Illinois Chapter on winning the finals! ACC Central on the Expo Floor was the one-stop-shop for ACC members and non-members to learn more about the College's offerings. The popular Sim Center on the Expo Floor allowed attendees to interact with a virtual patient during eight clinical case presentations while utilizing guidelines and clinical evidence. Attendees were encouraged to answer the questions on the interactive question walls including “choose one word to describe the future of cardiology.” A live Journal Club session took place during ACC.16 in the ENGAGE@ACC.16 Studio on the HOPE-3 and EARLY-BAMI trials. Results from the HOPE-3 Late-Breaking Clinical Trial support broader use of statins in intermediate-risk populations. Robert M. Califf, MD, MACC, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, presented the Eugene Braunwald Lecture on Future Directions in Cardiovascular Medicine. The Convocation Ceremony closed out the jam-packed three days of the latest science, innovation and education, ushered in the newest class of Fellows and Associates, and Kim Allan Williams Sr., MD, MACC, passed the presidential chain to Richard A. Chazal, MD, FACC.
