DESIGN AWARDS 2008 Good Neighbors l GOLD If you recall last year’s winner, you’ll spy a thread. Architect James Estes designed the two Block Island homes to be compatible, not copy cats. “Although related by their proximity, their simultaneous conception and the fact the owners are friends, the houses were to be distinct and have their own personalities, like fraternal twins,” he explains. Three separate forms (small gable, large gable and tower) are linked with a flat-roofed walkway and arranged to provide shel- ter and privacy on the second floor of this year’s star. Plywood ceilings and tongue-and-groove board paneling adhere to an easy summer vibe inside, while cedar shingles and boards on the exterior speak to the island’s ver- nacular. Visible to each other across an expanse of vegetation, the build- ings share commendable traits and award-winning status. Envy is a non- issue. In fact, according to our pros, “the dialogue is perfect—simple and elegant.” ARCHITECT: Estes/Twombly Architects, Inc., Newport; James Estes, AIA, Principal CONTRACTOR: Wes Deane, Highland Builders, Tiverton STRUCTURAL: Loren Yoder, Yoder & Tidwell, Ltd., Providence LANDSCAPE: Derek van Lent, Block Island PHOTOGRAPHER: Warren Jagger 54 ❘ RHODE ISLAND MONTHLY OCTOBER 2008 RESIDENTIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION
