Two pairs of friends decided to double their fun with a dual makeover, compliments of the Downtowner magazine and Turn Her Style, an image consulting practice specializing in personalized transformations. Leading the Turn Her Style team were Tiffany Ballard, style consultant, and Joyce Turner, owner. Queen Yancy and Lisa Thomas (left) have been friends since their 7th grade biology class. Keith Sargent and Lauren Sutton (pg. 16–18) are the friendly faces behind the pharmacy window at Downtown’s Walgreens. After their makeovers, these friends will look at each other in a whole new way … LISA THOMAS Occupation: Secretary, Memphis Air Traffic Control Tower Hobbies: Planting flowers, watching Turner Classic Movies, and reading mystery novels How I Met Queen: We met in our 7th grade biology class. During roll call, the teacher called Queen Ann’s name. I turned around and asked, “Is that your real name?” She said, “Yeah, and my momma’s name is Queen Elizabeth.” I said, “WHAT? For real, that is so cute!” Then the teacher got on to us for talking, and we both started laughing. We have been laughing for more than 20-something years ever since. Focus Areas: A whole lot of things! This double chin, for one, the rolls on my side and back, 25 pounds — now I’m depressed! I really just wanted a professional to do some troubleshooting with me. Why a Makeover: I want to get through my 40s with pizzazz, grace, and style while looking confident, chic, and elegant, so that my 40s will be something I look forward to with a zest for living my best! Helpful advice/tips: i learned the proper way to apply makeup that will take me into all seasons without overdoing it. Anything you “gave into”: the shoes! I thought they were too high, and i wasn’t sure i could walk in them. But they were platforms and actually very easy to walk in, very comfortable. They were the business! What do you like best about the “new” you? Not only was this experience wonderful for the outside of me, it worked miracles for the inside of me. TURN HER STYLE COMMENTS FOR LISA Lisa wanted a professional look combined with a sleek, retro, Lola Falana-esque style. She also wanted help with how to accentuate her eyes. We focused more on a night-on-the-town look, and we pushed the envelope a little more. Bolder, brighter colors. Lisa has great legs, so why not show them with a short skirt and dynamic shoes? TURN HER STYLE COMMENTS FOR QUEEN Queen wanted help with pulling off a nice look for her build. She needed a style that was suitable for the ministry — without looking too “minister-y”! We definitely wanted to get her out of the baggy, comfort clothes and into clothes that were more form-fitting. So we added a little more glamour, a lot more color, and accessorized. QUEEN YANCY Occupation: Student at Memphis Theological Seminary Hobbies: Working out, swimming, and traveling How I met Lisa: We’re throw-back classmates! I ran track and swam; she was a majorette and danced. I drove tractor trailers; she is a secretary. I am single with no children; she is married with children. We’ve stayed friends for almost 30 years! Focus areas: Well, that would be my middle area — the dreaded stomach — legs and rear end. I want to look like I am favored by God. I want to achieve a look with good taste befitting a minister. Why a makeover: Lisa and I realized that we have been devoted to being caretakers for family and friends in hospice and with Alzheimer’s, all the while neglecting ourselves. It’s been too long since we have taken care of our appearance! I want to acquire a style that will enhance and add flavor to my life! Helpful advice/tips: I can now coordinate a maxi dress with the right heels to achieve style and flair that are chic, classy, and elegantly fashionable. I would never have picked the circle scarf, and I learned some tips about applying eye shadow — how to coordinate and incorporate colors. Most nervous moment: The eyeshadow! They kept putting it on and putting it on. I was afraid it was going to be over the edge, but it wasn’t. It looked great! Anything you “gave into”: Showing my legs! I pretty much always camouflage them. Like best about the “new” you: I am just so impressed with everything. It really enhanced my look and made me feel so assertive! I felt I could accomplish anything. I came home and finished all my homework! And it was a humbling experience, as well. I couldn’t believe this was me! KEITH SARGENT Occupation: Pharmacist at Walgreens Downtown Hobbies: Make music, play softball, and eat! Helpful advice/tips: Don’t be afraid to wear colors. I saw several different color combinations, and I liked them all. Most nervous moment: When I learned they were going to put color in my hair, I was a little apprehensive because I’ve never done that before! I thought, “Oh, well, hair grows out in time.” But the highlights turned out great! Like best about the “new” you: By profession and by nature, I’m a caregiver. It felt so nice to have someone pay attention to me — and for me to pay attention to me — and to spruce up a little bit in the process. TURN HER STYLE COMMENTS FOR KEITH Keith wanted a more youthful, fun, carefree look. He just wanted something different — to look different — as much like Brad Pitt as possible! We focused on adding a little bit of highlights to his hair and beard and made the clothes a lot more fun and playful, as opposed to a stuffy office look. You don’t “do formal” with Brad Pitt! LAUREN BAIRD Occupation: Pharmacist at Walgreens Downtown Hobbies: Travel, reading, and sewing How I met Keith: I work part time so that Keith can take a day off. He would work every day if they’d let him! Focus areas: With a baby, it’s so hard to find time for me. I had been wearing my hair in a ponytail forever, and although my daughter is fabulously dressed, I look like her frumpy assistant! Why a makeover: I had been hiding in baggy clothes. I needed a jumpstart to help me put away my maternity clothes and get me to the next level style-wise. It was too overwhelming to start it on my own. Helpful advice/tips received: I always thought that longer-length shirts would help cover my stomach, but it’s actually more figure-flattering to wear them shorter at my waist. I was re-introduced to dresses — I had been living in jeans for so long. I discovered I can look cute a lot more easily than I thought, and with very little expense. Most nervous moment: None, really. I felt that anything would be an improvement, and I left the professional decisions up to the professionals — I was in good hands. Like best about the “new” you: Everything, head to toe. Just getting my hair fixed made it more manageable and easy to maintain. I just feel so good, and this experience really motivated me to put a little more time and effort into my appearance. TURN HER STYLE COMMENTS FOR LAUREN Lauren was fighting the “new mother” lack of style. She wanted help with how to combine cute, fun, young, and stylish with being a busy mother. Again, more color and more form-fitting clothes to accentuate her tall and lean shape. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time and effort to look your best.
