You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” —Dr. Seuss, “ Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Our students will be at this crossroads at the end of their high school careers, making plans for their real careers. It is our job as career and technical educa-tion (CTE) professionals to give them the knowledge and skills they need to know as well as the map to help them decide where to go. The core academic teachers in math, science, language arts, and social studies provide the foundation of knowledge, while CTE demonstrates to students how to apply that knowledge. That is, if we can get our message out to students, staff and guidance counselors about the value of our programs for all students. It is for that reason that February, CTE Month, is so important. Our School’s Mission Last year, we at East Hartford High School, located in Connecticut, made promoting CTE during the month of Feb-ruary our mission. That mission was two-fold—to inform and reform. First, we set out to inform the teachers, students, guid-ance counselors and parents about our programs; second, we set out to reform our image in the district from industrial arts and home economics to 21st century learning for college and careers. Although there was some financial commitment involved, there are many things that we did that incurred no cost and could be done by any district, regard-less of budgetary constraints. Our first goal was to reach the staff. We began by sponsoring a luncheon for the guid-ance staff during mid-term exam week 8 Techniques Januar y 2012
