A personalized learning strategy for each student At FLVS FT, we recognize that every individual has unique talents and traits—that’s why we provide one-on-one attention and develop a custom learning program tailored to each student’s abilities, interests, and learning style. We’ve seen our personalized approach make learning a positive experience for students at all levels of achievement, including advanced learners and struggling students. Our teachers have the ability to adjust lessons to provide the appropriate level of challenge or support needed. In addition, teachers take the opportunity to foster high-level thinking skills in advanced students who are enrolled in accelerated courses that feature increased degrees of complexity. Our Accelerated and Enriched program is available for grades 3–8; when appropriate, advanced coursework is available to younger students, including a Literature Study elective for 2nd graders. Students who require extra time, instruction, or practice to master material can also benefit from the added flexibility of virtual schooling. Our individualized approach enables teachers to provide the attention and resources students need to succeed. For elementary students working below grade level in reading or math, we offer a remediation plan called PACE (Program for All Children to Excel) to help them achieve proficiency and confidence. Students enrolled in FLVS FT through their resident school district may require district approval for Accelerated and Enriched learning classes. A supportive on-site Learning Coach Depending upon their ages and maturity levels, students may need the support of a Learning Coach—a parent or other responsible adult who provides ongoing supervision and guidance. Learning Coaches aren’t required to teach or provide instruction—their role is to provide structure for the student’s learning experience. They set the daily schedule, guide students through the lessons, monitor study habits, and keep the student motivated and on track. Learning Coaches should be keen observers with top-notch communication skills, so they can help teachers understand the student’s level of comprehension or other concerns. The time commitment and level of involvement required varies. In early elementary school, when students need frequent assistance and most work is completed offline, being a Learning Coach means investing a significant amount of time and hands-on effort. As students mature, they become more independent learners. While the amount of oversight required lessens, the need for structure and motivation—and the rewards of being involved— continues. A FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL FULL TIME FACT Our school is part of a group of programs rated an “A” every year since 2006 by the Florida Department of Education’s school grade program.
