National consumer magazine gives Winter Haven Hospital’s Bostick Heart Center a top rating for second year. A national consumer magazine has ranked Winter Haven Hospital’s Bostick Heart Center as one of the nation’s top-rated hospitals for heart-bypass operations for a second consecutive year. In rankings published September 2011, the Bostick Heart Center was given a three-star rating, the highest possible. The magazine gave its top three-star, or above-average, rating to five Florida hospitals, including Winter Haven Hospital. The other Florida hospitals rated as “above average” are: Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach; Memorial Regional Hospital, Hollywood; Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater and Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala. Of the 324 surgical groups ranked nationally, 81 were rated in the above average category. The national consumer magazine ratings are based on data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), a not-for-profit organization that represents some 5,400 surgeons worldwide who operate on the chest (or thorax), including the heart, lungs, and esophagus. STS has maintained the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database since 1989. It’s now the largest such registry in the world, including more than 4 million surgical records and representing more than 90 percent of adult cardiac surgery groups in the U.S. Much of the information is collected at the point of care, making it more valid than data collected for administrative or insurance reasons or for doctor ratings based on professional reputation. David Evans, M.D. and David Dodd, M.D. are the two cardiovascular surgeons for the Bostick Heart Center. Evans said he was gratified by the three-star rating in the magazine.

It also represents the extraordinary amount of work and care that our outstanding physicians, nurses and other clinicians have put into caring for our patients.”

Mary Jo Schreiber, vice president and chief nursing officer for Winter Haven Hospital, said: “The establishment of the Bostick Heart Center in 2005 and the operation of this outstanding program has been the focus of literally hundreds of individuals within our organization and within our community.

Our patients deserve the very best care that we can provide. That this program has achieved recognition of this caliber in a relatively short amount of time is a testament to the hard work and dedication to serving patients that we see throughout the hospital every day.”

“I would like to offer my thanks and congratulations to everyone who has played a role in making the Bostick Heart Center a reality,” Schreiber added. “It’s fair to say that the Bostick Heart Center has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people and we expect that to continue for many years to come.”

About Winter Haven Hospital

Established in 1926, Winter Haven Hospital serves as the major medical center for east Polk and Highlands counties and the U.S. Highway 27 / Ridge Corridor.
