Welcome to the 1000 Islands International Region A region once torn by war now stands united to welcome you to a garden of unparalleled beauty and international friendship. Beginning in 2012, American and Canadian communities among the 1000 Islands and Eastern Lake Ontario will commemorate the War of 1812 Bicentennial through special events, re-enactments, productions and revitalized heritage attractions. Many great battles of the War of 1812 were fought on these shores but Americans and Canadians now welcome each other and you to share in the breath-taking beauty of endless shorelines, historic forts, fairytale castles, quaint downtowns, top-notch theatre and family-fun amusements. Dubbed “Garden of the Great Spirit” by the native Iroquois, the 1000 Islands became the passageway to the Canadian and U.S. interiors. The St. Lawrence River was discovered in 1535 by Jacques Cartier and the area was later dubbed “Les Miles iles” or translated to English: The Thousand Islands. Distinguished visitors fl ocked to the 1000 Islands in the late 19 th Century and the area became widely known as a summer resort with grand hotels and steamship tour boats. Today, visitors come to enjoy the gentle waters, scenic views and natural beauty. All varieties of lodging are available from full-scale resorts to hotels, mom-and-pop motor lodges, shoreline cottages and campsites with pristine views of the water.
