Ocean State Golf June 2010 : Page 4

From the Editor Editor/Publisher J une is a great month in southern New England. Imagine seeing the best amateurs in the world the same week that you can see many of the best professionals in the world. I’ve always said that the best and least expensive (no admittance charge) golf event around is the Northeast Amateur held every year at Wannamoisett. In the last 15 years I’ve seen Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Anthony Kim, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and scores of others who have gone on to great professional careers. Who will be the next big star that will be playing for just a trophy in East Providence? Check it out if you get a chance. The issue is called the CVS Caremark Classic Issue for good reason. As tournaments struggle to survive, this two-day event just gets bigger and better. Every year the patrons have a rousing good time, and this year should be no different. Page 3 gives you an overviewand pages 14 and 15 gives you all the information you need for the event that runs June 27-29. Ann Moran sure had a good month. As she did last year, Ann won an OSWGA event by herself and then teamed with Maureen Ford to capture a team title. Bob Dick was there to cover both events and he gives you a perspective on how the events unfolded. Bobby Leopold, a Rhode Islander by way of England, won the Burke Tournament for the second year in a row. He will be skipping the British Amateur to play at the Northeast Amateur. Barrington High didn’t suffer the OSG Jinx. We had them on our cover in May and last week they went out and demolished the field in the Rhode Island High School Golf Championship for the fourth year in a row. Congratulations to Jared Adams who won the individual crown and helped lead Barrington to victory.
