Goals Within Our Reach I have some very specific goals for US-IRC in 2011. First, I want to clear up some of the myths and misunderstandings that many sailors have about obtaining an IRC certificate for their boat. There are, in fact, a variety of options available for IRC certificates, and depending on the actual boat design, getting a certificate may be as simple as obtaining sail-measurement information from your sailmaker and filling out the online application. Once in the system, regular revalidations are easy, inexpensive, and hassle free. Second, I want boat owners to better understand how and why ratings differ from rule to rule, particularly from PHRF to IRC. In my opinion, each of these two rules plays an important role within the sport of keelboat handicap racing, but they are very different in their complexity and how they operate. Third, I intend to have US-IRC work more closely with US SAILING. As the national governing body of sailing in the United States, US SAIL-ING is connected to the majority of boat owners and race organizers and is therefore ideally equipped to provide expertise and support to the IRC community. The personnel in the US SAILING Offshore Office are well versed in the nuances of the certificate process as well as the application of the rule. They are our direct link with the Royal Ocean Racing Club, and their involvement with the technicalities of the rule is an absolute must. Finally, I want to see IRC penetrate downward, in terms of the size of boats using the rule. In the majority of US-IRC events in 2010, the smallest boats racing were in the 36-to 37-foot range. What this means is that boats in the next increment lower (29 to 35 feet) were not competing in many well attended, well run regattas. The 2011 IRC schedule lists a number of new championships as well as those already established. I’d like to see a new group of IRC boats in atten-dance at these events, and I’m thinking specifically of the Soverel 33s, the X-332s, J/29s and J/35s, as well as boats that rate in the 90s and lower 100s in PHRF. There is no reason for this large group of well-sailed boats not to compete at this level. Web Site / Event Administration Luiz E.
