Five Local Fitness Experts Dish Out the Skinny What health tip has made the biggest difference in your personal life? Tonya Tittle, Energy Fitness: Cross-training so my workouts don’t get stale or less effective. Kelly Bowers, 101 Live: The realization that I can become strong and sculpt my body without joining a gym and using machines. Free weights and the use of my own body for resistance are as effective and, in many cases, better than machines — and it allows me to work out anywhere! Sarla Nichols, Midtown Yoga: Exercise daily and vary the form of exercise. Kelly Wight, Envision Memphis: Make exercise a way of life and make it fun! If you enjoy what you do and have fun doing it, it will be something you’ll always want to incorporate in your everyday life. Corey Klein, Klein Fitness: You are what you eat. After college, when I got out into the “real world,” I found I could not reach my desired fitness level without the proper diet. Diet is the most important thing when it comes to weight loss, and getting the right calories is just as important as getting the right amount. If you could promote one health tip, what would it be? Tonya Tittle, Energy Fitness: Get enough protein. Most people need between 80 to 100 grams (320 to 400 calories) of protein each day. Kelly Bowers, 101 Live: Stay away from high fructose corn syrup and chemically manufactured artificial sweeteners. These are poison to our bodies. Research shows that the body does not process HFCS in the same way as regular sugar, resulting, among other things, in abnormal fat storage, especially around the abdomen. Chemical sweeteners can increase your desire for carbohydrates and actually make you gain weight. I use regular sugar, agave nectar, or, if I want to stay calorie-free, stevia, a natural herbal extract. Sarla Nichols, Midtown Yoga: Meditate. Kelly Wight, Envision Memphis: Don’t focus on a number. Keep that in your peripheral. Exercise because it gives you energy, reduces stress, and always makes you feel better after you work out. Corey Klein, Klein Fitness: A lot of people think they have to run and hit the gym to get into shape. That’s not true. Find an activity you love that gets your blood pumping and use that as your main source of fitness. People are more likely to stick to a workout they enjoy. 101 LivE 21 Mina 201-4045 101live.org EnErgY FitnESS 552 S.
