Less is More… The Rewards of Recycling One great way your business can be more environmental is through a recycling program. Here are some basic tips for getting started: Find a coordinator. Designate a person who’ll oversee the entire recycling operation and serve as a key resource for everyone in your business. Audit what gets pitched. Conducting a waste audit is a smart fi rst step so you can see just how much you’re wasting and what type of impact you can have through recycling. It also helps you determine what types of recyclers you’ll need to work with. Get the thumbs up. You need buy-in from the owners/managers in your company to get this program off the ground and keep in running successfully. The results from your audit will help you promote and garner support for your recycling program. Practice prevention. Before you focus on recycling, see if there are ways you can reduce waste fi rst. In addition to environmental benefi ts, waste prevention saves money. Socially Speaking… We’re proud to be a featured participant in the new Social Media Field Guide , “A Resource for Graphic Communicators” published by the Printing Industries of America. This handy resource helps printers understand social media and gives a not-too-technical approach for customer engagement and strategy. Written by Julie Shaffer and Mary Garnett, this guide covers the fundamentals of social media so that any member of the graphic communications industry can take advantage of these new tools. “This guide provides essential infor-mation about a valuable medium for helping our customers increase their bottom line. We’re thrilled to be a part of it,” says Steve Brocker, VP of sales and marketing at Western States. Recycling Rewards at Western States We started our recycling program in 2008 by recycling eight products. To-date, we keep a total of 14 items in recycling bins and out of landfi lls. In fact, we’ve saved at least 65 tons of waste since we started recycling. We’ve also eliminated the need for a dumpster to collect our scrap wood, which saves us an additional $2,800 per year. Plus we cut our shredded waste cost in half and have converted this waste into recyclable chip and mix bails and boxes. So far, this chip and mix recycling has earned us $31,804 in the fi rst quarter of 2011, up more than 3x from the $9,247 in Q1 2008 we earned before our chip/mix recycling! For more details on implementing a recycling program, go to the EPA’s site at: http://www.epa.gov under “Learn the Issues: Waste.” Staples Envelope Supplier of the Year: This past February, Staples Print Solutions (SPS) named Western States its Envelope Supplier of the Year for 2010.
