Canadian Biodiesel Haig: 2% Mandate Will Triple Canadian Production The Canadian government’s 2% biodiesel mandate for diesel fuel and heating oil that went into effect July 1 will triple the demand for biodiesel in Canada, according to Tim Haig, interim president of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA), Ottawa, (613-594-5528). There are currently 22 biodiesel plants operating in Canada with a pro-duction capacity of 205 million liters a year (MMLY), or about 54.2 million gallons a year (MMGY). The new Canadian renewable fuels regulations that took effect July 1 re-quire a minimum average volume of 2% renewable content in diesel fuel and heating oil. A mandate that requires gasoline producers and importers to have an average renewable fuel content of at least 5% of the volume of gasoline (E5) they produce or import a year went into effect Dec. 15, 2010. Haig said the biodiesel mandate will be good for Canada’s biodiesel industry. “The CRFA would like to thank the Canadian government for implementing the 2% biodiesel mandate,” Haig told The CRFA would like to thank the Canadian gov-ernment for implementing the 2% biodiesel mandate. -Tim Haig, Canadian Renewable Fuels Association BioFuels Journal in an interview Aug. 9. “It’s adding to demand and that’s what Response No. 621 Response No. 622 62 BFJ | Third Quarter 11
