2011 Annual Report 2011 : Page 1
From Dr. Salmon “We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” Sonia Johnson F or the past eight years the TCPS team of educators has worked diligently to provide an educa-tional experience for students second to none in Maryland. By using innovative teaching strate-gies that incorporate state-of-the-art technology, our students have achieved amazing results in an array of academic, career and technology, artistic, and athletic arenas. But as we continue to grapple with the budget constraints imposed by a lingering national economic downturn, fewer teachers and instructional resources, we must consider: What if the power of one becomes the power of many and the power of many becomes the power of one? Recognizing the power of individual actions as well as the collective actions of our community partners in shaping our students’ attitudes and abilities is the theme of this year’s Annual Report. 2011 Teacher of the Year, Angie Asmussen, exemplifies the power individual teachers and schools can have on students ability to navigate successfully through elementary school. Eric Moseley, instructional facilitator for technology, attended Apple Computer’s prestigious Apple Academy with the intent of sharing newly learned applications with students and teachers. Using his experience as an emergency responder, transpor-tation manager Fred McCracken led the school system’s effort to implement new safety standards for county school buses. These are three examples of TCPS staff whose exceptional efforts improved the educational experience for all. Equally important as the contributions made by individual staff members, are the many partner organiza-tions that work with Talbot County Schools to expand and enrich students’ school life. Programs and activities conducted in collaboration with Horn Point, Pickering Creek, Choptank Community Health, Environmental Concern, and Laser Letters are also highlighted in this year’s report. As we work together this year to fulfill our mission that “each student will learn, grow, and succeed”, we are mindful of the “power of one” and will seek to be that change agent, the spark that can change a life. For we do not know how many children’s lives we touch every day and what impact that will have on the rest of their lives. 2011 Annual Report | TALBOTSCHOOLS.ORG 1
