Exp. 03-06-12 New Of fi cers Invite You to the 20th Annual Railroad & History Day Wayne Spivey Staff Writer Join Clay County Historical Society members and guests for the 20th Annual Railroad & History Day, Saturday, March 3, from 10am to 4pm at the Old Courthouse, 915 Walnut Street in Green Cove Springs. All free to the public. The historical society’s new of fi cers promise a great family outing full of fun, history and activities. They were installed at their January meeting: President Marilyn Haddock, Vice President Carolyn Clark, Secretary Lee Bentley and Treasurer Amy Dunn. “We are looking forward to another fi ne year dedicated to the preservation of Clay County’s rich and unique history,” said Haddock. Although the society has operated the local museum for decades, the annual railroad event began in 1992. The society acquired a railroad collection from Bud Hess of Switzerland, Florida and brought it to the county seat. Most noticeable is the red caboose and an authentic railroad station next to the Old Courthouse, the oldest in the state of Florida. All together, the 1889 Courthouse, Train Depot and Old Jail complete the Historic Triangle within Walnut and Ferris Streets and Gratio Place. Within the his-toric triangle the local mu-seum is also open on Sun-days from 2 to 5, except holi-days, and tours are conducted by volunteers. Inside there is an old coun-try store and a kitchen from a century ago. Another popu-lar collection includes the dollhouse and tourist items relating to the ‘resort era’, when Green Cove Springs Pictured left to right -Carolyn Clark, Vice President; Marilyn Haddock, attracted tour-President; Installation Of fi cial, Chris Chambless; Amy Dunn, Treasurer; ist from across the nation. and Lee Bentley, Secretary The medicinal spring water and grand hotels catered to the riverboat traf fi c in the late 1800s. At Railroad and History Day you may tour the caboose or jump on an authentic handcar. The old jail and museum will be open for tours. Railroad Day includes live entertainment, historical re-enactors and old time crafts displays. The mission of the CCHS is to preserve the heritage of Clay County through the collection, preservation, and display of artifacts and historical material; by maintaining a museum; and by conducting activities which, for the education and enjoyment of the community, promote awareness of this heritage.
